We are trying to do as many shows as we can. Therefore, MamaLittleHelper is heading out to Vegas in September! Vegas baby! We are going to be placing a booth with the 7th Annual ABC Kids Expo. It is the biggest kids expo in the nation and open for retailers as well as wholesalers. It is from September 13 to 16th 2009 in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

How can MamaLittleHelper Baby Hammock help acid reflux babies?

Here are just some tips about baby acid reflux:

Symptoms:

Constant or sudden crying
Spitting up after meal (Sometimes could be projectile vomiting)
Short nappers (Frequently waking up)

Advise from people to help the baby:

Get MamaLittleHelper's Baby Hammock to help your baby sleep. The elevation (From 5 to 45 degrees) will help your baby sleep better together with the motion.
Maintain an upright position after feeding. I was told to hold him up for 15-20 minutes after each meal.
Change to Enfamil A.R Lipil Milk or any A.R milk
Talk to you doctor, they will probably give you prescription medication such as Prevacid.
According to a lot of sites, you should continue to breastfeed because breast milk is well-known to have many advantages over formula as breast milk is easier and digest faster. I couldn't do this, the reason is because I didn't produce a lot of milk.
Try to make your baby sleep on the left side. It is because this position allows the inlet of the stomach to be higher than the exit. According to this, it will help to keep the food down.

My Little Story of our baby boy who suffered from baby acid reflux
Well, first of all, I just wanted all our my readers to know that I have a little boy and when he was born, he was so easy to take care. For the first 2 weeks, he would just sleep and get up for food, and then sleep. Life was perfect then.

Then, comes the 2nd week.... the nightmare begins. He was spitting up, he was hardly sleeping much. He would be throwing up after each meal. Every time he passes out gas, he would cry. I felt like I was going crazy. I am so glad that mom was here to help, I wouldn't have make it without her.

We brought him to the doctor for the regular checkups and told her about our problems. She then told me that he had acid reflux. He was then given Prevacid I believe is the name of the medication. Since it was more than 2 years ago, I don't remember exactly how often he had to take it. But then, one week, and then 2 weeks past, he still was doing the same thing. Since this is my first baby, I didn't know much about acid reflux and thought that maybe she's a fairly young doctor, she didn't know what she's talking about. So, we saw another doctor instead. Without telling him much about what our previous doctor said, he told us that he had acid reflux too. He then was given the same medication and on top of that, another medicine. I will try to look for my records to see what other medication it was.

Though, both medication did not help. So, I turn to the internet, to look for words like Acid Reflux babies, How to get your baby to sleep, My baby doesn't sleep, Baby spitting, etc. So, I tried putting him in the car seat, it only worked for 1 day, then, putting him on the car seat on the dryer, didn't work. Drove out at 1am, he was screaming at first but stopped after 10 minutes. I went on the road with most bump, hey, it worked, as soon as I turn back and about 1 minute from home, he started crying again. It was just a nightmare.

Everyday, we would find something new and it would probably work for a day or two, even tried the womb bear, it worked for a few days and that's about it. Then, the 10th week is when I was sent to Asia for work and was finally able to bring this baby hammock back. As soon as I put him in... wa la... he kept quiet and started sleeping longer and longer in it. That's how I decided that this would help babies with reflux. Actually, there are a lot of recommendations out there to get baby hammock for reflux babies but not all of them work.

Comparison of a Ghodiyu or Ghodiya or Thooli to a Baby Hammock

We notice that about 20% of our customers were originally from India that are living here in United States. Some even came back to get for their relatives. So, I was curious and I asked my customers, why do they like the baby hammock so much. They told me that because it looks and is used exactly like a Ghodiyu.

Ghodiyu is an Indian word that means "to help the baby sleep" or it means an Indian Cradle as well. Apparently, the ghodiyu or ghodiya has been used preRaam Bhagwan era. They pronounce it as "God-yu". I was also told that people from South India use something called a Thooli. According to her, thooli means cradle in Tamil (Indian word). It's a hammock that's hung from the ceiling rather than a stand.

So, we thought of just having a summary of the benefits of our baby hammock over the ghodiyu:

Our baby hammock is JPMA certified, the ghodiyu is not.
The baby hammock can be taken apart in less than 5 minutes, placed in a travel bag and easily checked in if you like to travel with your baby hammock. With the ghodiyu, you cannot do that.
There is no tools required to assemble the baby hammocks. In less than 5 minutes, you will be able to set up the baby hammock but not for the ghodiyu.
The ghodiyu is a lot more bulky compared to the baby hammock. The baby hammock is a lot more compact.
The ghodiyu does not help with reflux baby. Our baby hammock comes with the 3 levels of elevation, recommended for all reflux babies.
The ghodiyu cannot work with any automatic cradles, therefore, you will always have to manually rock the baby yourself with the tether provide. As for the baby hammock, if you decide to get the automatic baby hammock unit, it is "HANDS FREE" baby rocking.
There were complains in the web stating that the ghodiyu scratches the hard wood floors.
Most importantly, the baby hammock actually mimics being in mama's tummy. When mama walks, the motion is up and down, only the baby hammock can provide. The ghodiyu is just like a baby swing that you can get from Walmart or Target and can only go side to side or front to back. This is the biggest benefit of the baby hammock over the baby swing.

Differences between the Computerized Baby Hammock Versus the Portable Automatic Self Rocking Baby Hammock?

You are probably wondering what is the differences between the Computerized Baby Hammock Versus the Portable Automatic Self Rocking Baby Hammock? Which is better for you and your baby or is there a difference?

First of all, some of you may not even know what is a computerized or portable automamtic self rocking baby hammock? Basically, a baby hammock is like basically a hammock but designed for babies to mimic being in mama's womb. You could buy the baby hammock that is what we call the manual version, whereby it is either there is no movement or you have to rock the hammock up and down before it moves. But mama doesn't stand still all the time, most of the time, mama is busy walking up and down or doing something and therefore there is movement. I happen to have the opportunity to babysit my nephew on a weekend, so, I have a few pictures of the boys sleeping in the hammocks. On my right, I have a MamaLittleHelper's cloth diaper with one diaper insert

and on my left, I have a MamaLittleHelper's cloth diaper but this is with 2 diaper inserts. You may be wondering, why 2 inserts?

It is good especially when you go out & would like to ensure that the diaper will not leak because sometimes, it may be hard to find a place to change your baby, so, our advise is to use 2 inserts when you are on the go.

We did some research online to find out how much does baby urine. According to a lactation consultant website, a healthy baby less than 6 weeks should have about 5-6+ wet diapers, each approximately (45ml), which is equivalent to 1.5oz

As for babies over 6 weeks, we should expect about 4-5 wet diapers. Each wet diapers about 90ml, which is equivalent to 3oz.

So, we will pour several 4oz of water on the diaper since this is a 4oz milk bottle to see how many oz of water can our diaper take.

We did 5 times of 4oz for the one on the right to be filled.

The one on the right with one insert started to leak a little on the side but NOT in the middle. You can see with the paper towel that we put below the diaper.

We continued with the 2 inserts and found that it can take a least 24 oz or more.

So, to conclude, it takes about 20oz of water to fill up the 1 insert and at least 24 oz of water to fill up the 2 inserts. So, do you still think you have doubts about MamaLittleHelper's Diapers?

Though, I know that some of you are not trying to keep your babies awake. You are actually trying to get them to sleep. You may have tried all the ways you can to get them to sleep but unsuccessful especially new born. Why? The reason is because they are so used to be in mama’s womb for over 9 months. They are so used to being cuddled and bounced most of the time when you are awake. It is hard for them to get use to the environment right away. Typically, for the first 2 weeks, they are usually ok as they tend to sleep most of the time but as they grow over 2 weeks, they tend to learn new things and then, they realized, this is not what I am used to and I don’t like it and tend to be fussy and cranky. Will you have problems switching your baby from a baby hammock to a crib?

I am sure a lot of you are probably worried about putting your babies in the baby hammock. The reason is because you are worried that if you put them in the baby hammock and if they love it so much, you will have problems switching them over to the crib.

Wanna listen to my honest opinion? So what if that happens? What is the first priority here? It is to get your little one to sleep as much as possible because according to some articles, which I will post later, babies grow when they sleep. So, why worry about that when your little one is actually growing and most important both mama/ papa and baby have the rest they need?

I would like to share my personal experience with all. So far, I will be honest that I did not have a problem switching him over to his crib at night. That was after his bad acid reflux was over. During the time when he had his bad acid reflux, it was whatever works. There were nights where he was sleeping in his baby hammock, there were nights where we had to rotate to carry him because he refused to sleep anywhere except in our arms, so, we just went with what he wants because we knew that he was uncomfortable. Once he got out of his reflux, he was a happy baby sleeping in his favorite baby hammock.

I think we should not worry about whether or not they will get use to the baby hammock and not the crib. If they prefer to sleep in the baby hammock, as long as it is comfortable, why not?

History of Baby Hammock (Sarong)

I believe a lot of you have been wondering, where did the baby hammocks come from and why people loves the baby hammock?

Where did the baby hammocks come from?
Sarong or traditional "batik" is basically a large length of fabric often wrapped around the waist and worn by men and women especially in the South East Asia region. Long, long time ago, instead of using the cotton cloth hammock, people mostly use the sarong or the old-fashioned batik because it is a large fabric and easy to make as a hammock. Several generations of babies have slept in the sarong before being transferred to a bed, cot or crib. They are hooked to a spring mostly from a ceiling or bars from the staircase. They are well-known with various name of sarong, sarung, baby cradle, sarong buaian, "yao lan" in mandarin. Therefore, these hammocks have gone back decades ago and not did not just came out recently.

Why people loves the baby hammock?
From our previous blog, babies especially newborn loves to feel as if they were still in mama's tummy. Spending averaging 37-40 weeks (some premies spend less time in mama's tummy), it is hard to adapt to a foreign environment. If you notice, that is why when babies are born, they tend to cry and they usually throw their hands up as if they are struggling, the reason is because they are so used to be cuddled and in a swaddled positon. Therefore, being in the sarong makes them feel as if some one is cuddling and hugging them. Newborns and babies loves the rocking movement. The gentle up and down movement mimics in mama's tummy because mama walks and works and babies feels the up and down movement. Also, the weight of the baby actually pulls the fabric in around him, creating a womb or common like environment. Also, according to the older generations, in order to have a round and nice shape of the baby's head, they need to sleep in something that molds the shape of the head. You can tell with all the benefits that we have stated with using the baby hammock but we would sure love all to know where it all started....

I guess some of you may be curious as to what is the differences between the baby hammock and the swing? Why buy the baby hammock whereby you can get a variety of baby swings from anywhere like Walmart, Target, Babies "R" Us, etc?

Benefits of Baby Hammock over the Baby Swing:

The baby hammock can be taken apart in less than 5 minutes, placed in a travel bag and easily checked in if you like to travel with your baby hammock. With the swing, you cannot do that.
The baby hammock is a lot more stable compared to the baby swings. They have a wider base and is safer for babies.
There is no tools required to assemble the baby hammocks. In less than 5 minutes, you will be able to set up the baby hammock but not for the baby swings.
The baby swing is a lot more bulky compared to the baby hammock. The baby hammock is a lot more compact.
Even though the recommended age for the baby hammock is up to 8-12 months but like for my baby, he slept in it till he was 18 months. There is no way that we can put a baby in the baby swing for over 7 months.
Most importantly, the baby hammock actually mimics being in mama's tummy. When mama walks, the motion is up and down, only the baby hammock can provide. The baby swing can only go side to side or front to back. This is the biggest benefit of the baby hammock over the baby swing.

To those who attended the American Baby and Family Expo in Houston the past weekend, May 16 & 17 2009), welcome back. It was 2 interesting days whereby we got to meet different people from all walks of life but with the same mission, which is to find out what is out there for their babies and what is THE BEST!!!

WE were so happy to meet all of the people that we managed to talk to that day. A lot of people did not know much about the baby hammocks. A lot of them were asking, what is this? What does it do? Basically, these baby hammocks are especially helpful when you have a baby that has acid reflux or is colicky. Some babies have severe acid reflux and needs to be tilted a little. As for babies with colic (mostly babies that are fussy a certain time of the day would love to be rocked constantly. With all that said, where can you find something that can calm and soothe your baby? That is when parents need, our baby hammock.

JPMA Certification Process - We are on our way!

So far, we only have a few buyers who asked us if our baby hammocks are JPMA certified. For those who do not really know what JPMA is, it is actually called t he Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. It is basically an organization that ensures the safety standards of the product in the market. Please note that it is NOT a must to get the JPMA certification in order to sell here in US but it sure does give customers the confident in our product.

I have been going back and forth with the JPMA coordinator and guess what? We are ready to move on with the next plan, which is to start our certification process. It sure cost us some money but I think it is all well spent to get the confidence of our buyers.

We will keep all posted when this is done. We hope that by end of July, we will be certified and we will be able to put the JPMA seal out there!

Traveling but need to bring your Baby Hammock? No problem....

We had a couple of clients asking, is it easy to travel with the baby hammock? With our travel bag, no problem at all. Finally, our first camping trip. It was pretty exciting because it was Laynce and Bruno's first camping trip. I don't know if Laynce is going to be really cranky or if he's going to have a great time. I am so glad that he had a great time with his buddy Lucas and Ella, which we just met during the camping trip. Since it was our first camping trip, I was so anxious, we left a little too early. We got there at about 10+ but we found out that the campsite won't be available till 2pm. Finally at about 11+, almost all of our friends arrived. While waiting for the campsite to be ready, we were having fun at the picnic site but Laynce got really cranky. Of course, his nap time is about 11+ everyday and because of that, he was whinny all the time. Even though I was wanting to sleep in the hammock at the campsite but I don't think he will be able to wait till 2pm to sleep. So, I decided to put the hammock close to where we picnic.

To all parents out there, wonder if this experience this. Well, some parents leave their baby in the room and let them sleep alone and fall asleep themselves. Some parents like my husband and I sleep with our precious little one. Though, I think both ways, if your baby starts to walk, they will run about the room, sometimes, it takes an hour before he is tired and finally lays on the bed and fall asleep. Like most mom, I have to wait for him to sleep and then, get up and do my other housework, cleaning, nothing that I look forward for but... :)

Anyway, most nights, we end up sleeping way before he does and once I sleep, I cannot wake up. The next thing I know, it's 6 or 7am whereby it's the next day.

Any one ith the same problem??? Hey, guess what, I told my husband that we cannot do that any more. My chores at home are not done as they should each week. I was thinking hard as to what can I do to make this little guy sleep way faster than he should. So, it strikes me right away... he loves to sleep in his hammock, why not his hammock at night. We can put him in there for 1 hour or so after he sleeps and then, move him up to his crib.

So, that night, with that thoughts, I gave him a kiss, ask his "da da" to give him a kiss as well and I carried him to his hammock. Well, of course, he loves to sleep with his favorite blankie as well as his little pillows that nana made for him before he was born, he has to sleep with them. So, I had to go get it for him after I put him down...

TA DA....... 6 minutes and sound asleep.... if you hear closely, he was even snoring. WOW... at least now I know for sure if I needed to be working late that night, I make sure that I just put him in the hammock. I think it is actually good for him, the reason is because he gets to sleep the additional hour and comfortably.

We went to the DFW Free Baby Expo yesterday. It was a great experience and definitely a positive one. Unfortunately we learnt about this expo a little too late and was not in time put a booth there.

Leasing a Computerized Baby Hammock? What do you think?

I have been thinking of ways to introduce the computerized baby hammock to United States. The computerized baby hammock is a wonderful hammock if you have a fussy baby that requires you to cuddle and rock all the time. Why? The reason is because it mimics a "Mama" cuddling the baby and also rocking the baby as if you are rocking him/ her. But since the price is a more than the regular baby hammock that we sell, it is harder to sell them. Though, overall, the price is still cheaper than Amby Baby and the Amby Baby Motion bed still requires some one to manually rock the baby.

I was thinking that maybe we can start leasing the computerized baby hammock so that mommy and daddy can use this for a few months and when your baby is no longer that fussy, they can switch back to the regular baby hammocks. I don't know if this will work but maybe it is worth a try?

This week has been a great week!!! I have a customer who just bought the MamaLittleHelper Baby Hammock from us and she took a picture of her baby and posted it on our MamaLittleHelper Baby Hammock facebook. She put a picture of her baby, MJ in the baby hammock.
